6 Scarves 2021: Jan-June Recap, #3 Navy & Grey, Lily

For an introduction to the 6 Scarves 2021 project, see this post.

For a description of my method, see this post.

I love a navy background floral print, and this birds-and-flowers print on our inspiration scarf is no exception.

We are halfway through 2021 with these items in the Lily wardrobe:

Jan-Jun Garments: #3 Navy & Grey, Lily
Jan-Jun Accessories: #3 Navy & Grey, Lily

Let's review some warm weather outfits starting with this bright blue striped top from our June additions that screams summer to me. In Outfit #1, the top is paired with our trust navy pants and leopard print Oxfords that have been in the wardrobe from the beginning. While long pants and lace-up shoes may be a bit much for the height of summer, it will (eventually) start to cool down just a bit, and this subtle print mix outfit will be ready to go.

Jan-Jun Outfit #1: #3 Navy & Grey, Lily

Outfit #2 combines the same navy pants with this chambray blouse + pink cardigan combination from the June additions. The jewelry pieces bring in pops of two summer trends: modern pearls (this strand has a few sparkly beads in the front to keep things fun) and camp-inspired jewelry (in the form of seed bead bracelets). I'm envisioning the cheerful fish silk scarf worn on a ponytail.

Jan-Jun Outfit #2: #3 Navy & Grey, Lily

Outfit #3 is a bit dressier work look adding a lavender T-shirt to June's white skirt and navy jacket combo. The vivid floral scarf brings all the colors together, and the fish earrings are a quirky touch I could not resist.

Jan-Jun Outfit #3: #3 Navy & Grey, Lily

Outfit #4 demonstrates that we had not exhausted the summer outfit possibilities before adding new pieces in June. The scarf may be a bit warm for many locations in summer, but that's okay, you can save it for later when it cools down; the outfit looks complete without it. I just love how the various blue and periwinkle colors washing through the scarf blend with these pieces.

Jan-Jun Outfit #4: #3 Navy & Grey, Lily

Finally Outfit #5 is all about blending various shades of pink and orchid, including a scarf in that handy ombré print that I just cannot say enough good things about. I'm still stretching my blending-not-matching muscles, but one thing I keep coming back to is that it seems easier to blend three or more variants on a color than only two. One pink item + another somewhat different pink item can come across a little bit like you just misjudged the colors. Including three or more different pinks makes it clearer that you're intentionally putting together a bunch of variants in a tonal blend. This isn't to say I wouldn't or don't put together only two different versions of a color in outfits...just that for me, it seems easier to do and easier for my eye to accept when there's more than two. (And once again, these pieces are from earlier additions except for the blue flats we added in June.)

Jan-Jun Outfit #5: #3 Navy & Grey, Lily

I am so glad to have a white skirt for summer. A few years ago, I had a very summery pleated skirt that I loved but stained with guacamole at lunch. (One advantage of WFH? I wear a giant apron when I eat and there's no one to think I'm crazy who doesn't already know it to be true.) I didn't know whether I'd be able to replace it but I lucked out with this straighter cut skirt with textured fabric (Talbots brand, thrifted for $16.99). Like its predecessor, it is LINED...like white bottoms should be. I've worn this skirt a lot of ways since its purchase in March 2019. Here are three of them.

This June outfit features the white skirt and navy jacket that we saw in Outfit #3 above. So many solid and print tops will work with it...pretty much any accent color and almost any neutral (I'm not sure about black; I don't have the style skillz to sell a navy + black combo). In this instance I pulled in a navy background floral print, and to let the print shine, I kept the accessories neutral and minimal.

June Outfit with White Skirt and Navy Jacket

I love this bluebird blouse (Loft brand, thrifted from Goodwill) and am looking for different ways to wear than with a blue or navy skirt. In this July outfit, I used one of my go-to combinations: white skirt + denim shirt-as-jacket. A blue necklace and ballet flats tie in with both the denim and the bluebirds on the blouse.

This August outfit features a styling trick that I tried last summer for the first time: wearing a scarf like a wrap/kimono. I just didn't have quite the topper piece I wanted for this blue striped tank to create a print mix. I wanted something very lightweight but that would provide a little coverage since it can get a little cool at times working from home in a skirt and sleeveless top when I have my fan blowing directly on me. (Oh, the joys of sitting at my desk working in the summer and occasionally feeling just a smidge cool...another thing I will miss from WFH.) So I finally took the plunge on trying this trick in this safe "no one but Robot will see if it looks absolutely ridiculous" situation, and I loved it! As a plus-size woman, getting a comfortable fit in this faux-kimono style means that the scarf needs to be generously sized so it doesn't feel restrictive as I type, so I definitely have scarves that are not suited to this use. But I do have some other large yet lightweight scarves that are almost too big when I wear them around my neck that I will try this styling method with.

To wrap things up (ahem), let's revisit our rabbit menagerie and test out a beauty bundle with them. This time the beauty bundle is blue.

And yes, our rabbits now look ridiculously accessorized.

Are you wearing any trends this summer?

In my next capsule post, we will take look at the recap for our fourth wardrobe: #4 Olive & Beige, Kiwi.

I do a lot of blending of purple/lilac and grey in the summer with a smattering of orchid, turquoise and aqua thrown in, depending on the patterns I'm wearing with it. However, I'm careful to ensure the tonal values or the depth/clarity of the whole outfit match or blend with those in the pattern. I wouldn't wear soft muted tones with a bright necklace, unless the pattern had that exact shade of pink but even then, I'd be wary. I'd find a necklace in a similar colour but a muted tone.

That makes a lot of sense, Beth...muted with muted, bright with bright. I can definitely see how that helps blend the tones nicely. A good thing for me to keep in mind!

How did you tie the scarf as a kimono. I have an amazing scarf with fish on it which would look splendid as a kimono.

Haha, good question! I played around with it for a bit and don't exactly remember. But I think I ended up with a very simple method--draping the scarf around my neck and spreading it out, then tying in the front. There are various more complicated methods online. This is a nice one for making a lightweight vest, for example:
